About The Project

Turning Point Scotland is a leading charity and social care provider in the country, offering essential services to individuals with learning disabilities, substance misuse issues, mental health challenges, and a wide range of other social concerns. Their website serves as a vital online hub, relied upon by policymakers, service users, and industry peers alike.

Our partnership with Turning Point Scotland began in 2022, when we took over the management of their ModX website after their previous designer left them without support. ModX, a little-known content management system (CMS), proved to be challenging not only for the client but also for our experienced team. We found it cumbersome to use and extremely limited in its capabilities compared to modern CMS platforms. After approximately 18 months of managing the website, we collectively agreed with the client that migrating to WordPress would be the best step forward, providing them with greater autonomy over their website and its content.

Our Design Process

A key aspect of our brief was to create a website that the Turning Point Scotland team could easily edit and update on their own. With this goal in mind, we initiated the project by installing the Elementor page builder and customising a theme to reflect their new branding, including logos, fonts, and images. We then developed an early preview of the homepage design and shared it with the client. Following this, we met with the team to discuss the project timeline, acknowledging that the project would progress slowly, as Turning Point Scotland planned to use the redesign as an opportunity to revise all their web content.

To ensure seamless collaboration, we hosted the development website on a subdomain, allowing all stakeholders at Turning Point Scotland to review each stage of the project live and approve media and content as we completed each page. One of the challenges we faced was migrating a unique service directory database from the ModX site, for which WordPress had no direct equivalent. To address this, we identified a property directory plugin that closely matched our needs and heavily customised it to align with the desired style. We then populated the directory with all available service locations and completed the development by manually adding their historic news and blog articles.

Project Completion & Launch

The project was carefully executed throughout 2024, adhering to Turning Point Scotland’s timeline. As we approached September, we agreed to launch the new site at the start of the month.

In preparation for the launch, we conducted final quality checks on the website and coordinated with the client’s IT team to schedule DNS changes to point the domain to our WordPress-optimised server. Nexus will continue to provide hosting and support services for Turning Point Scotland as they take on the management of this new platform.
